You Can Still Utilize Cents

Cents rounding is a new thing in Ireland...find out more below Click To Tweet

coins euroMost of us have probably heard of the new initiative to phase out 1 and 2 cent coins. This has been announced in the media, but are we too early to be dumping our coins-jars?

Yes, it is true government decided to stop making 1 and 2 cents coins, but those remain a legal tender. Most shops are not rounding up their prices as yet and as a customer you are entitled to seek the correct change after making a purchase. According to Irish Times, some 2,454,465,931 1 cent and 2 cent coins have been issued in Ireland since the introduction of the euro, with a total value of €37 million.

Here is the breakdown of the rounding off, but would this actually happen?

  • A transaction of €10.21 or €10.22 will be rounded to €10.20
  • A transaction of €10.23 or €10.24 will be rounded to €10.25
  • A transaction of €10.26 or €10.27 will be rounded to €10.25
  • A transaction of €10.28 or €10.29 will be rounded to €10.30

Interestingly, it is happening, but not many noticed the changes. Well, we value the receipts and already wrote about why receipts are not a worthless piece of paper and can actually make you cash, but here is something we noticed, see below.
